"Three
saxophones, a pianoless rhythm section. Frank’s dance is developing through a
kaleidoscopic world.
It’s Jazz and improvisation touched by a wide range of influences, from marching bands to post rock. All this with an eclectic, aggressive, jumping, ironic, post-modern, electric attitude. If the most evident example is the shutting down announcement that anticipates “Frank at the Mall”’s conclusion - the last enthralling track, “modulated” on a discomusic pulse - the entire Tanz Frank Tanz path is looking for musical images.
The attention to the dance’s line is easily running through the nine tracks following the compositions’ sense: it’s music made to dance and let your feet go with the rhythm. In general, this music reflects the band members’ multiple interests and discloses the multi-influenced band attitude that aims not to follow the traditional musical genre.
You will find yourself embraced since the beginning by the notes of the first track “Cheese” which leads you already towards the quintet’s philosophy: the slow-but-groovy rhythm, the slightly melancholic theme, the fine attention at the horns blending possibilities. We find the same concept in the funky-and-happy “Suzie’s Groove” or in the articulated “Frank en Stein”. Even for the slow tunes Frank doesn’t give up to its nature: “Elias” or “Fly” for example add the free and in some points dissonant elements to the expressive range, and even though the groove might slow down we can see the original intention of combining the different elements. “Trauerzug” in some ways is the convergent point before the sparkly and conclusive “Onwards and Upwards” and “Frank at the mall”.
The attention to an organic result justifies the collective band name. The intention of seeking all the band’s set-up possibilities, which is very particular, has been combined with a general sound cohesion which meets the projects requirements.
The frontline consisting of Conni Nicklaus, Olympia Jensen and Giulia Barba aim to also control the harmony issue. After the theme, the horns lines continue during the improvisation section. The rhythm section functions as a support, but at the same time enjoys the freedom left by the horns and plays together with the dense frontline melody.
Everything is developed with comfort and without a fixed grid. In the end “Tanz Frank Tanz” is a sort of concept album developed around our Frank’s dance moves and Frank’s stories that we followed until he’s been kindly asked to leave the mall."
