Jazz de marras is formed by four musicians with
different backgrounds from the music scene in Seville.
The first members of the band met in the summer of
2005, durig the Festival d'Avignon (France), where Pablo and Luis, together
with drummer Diego Naranjo, took to the street a short narrative show about the
life of Django Reinhardt, with the ensemble Swing de Rue. After this experience
they decided to set up a new manouche jazz project that would combine
concert-hall format and street show, a kind of performance that takes the
public closer the band, something that they had previously much enjoyed.
With the addition of Fran at the end of 2006, jazz de
marras trio was born, taking part in the I Festival Soberao Jazz in Dos
Hermanas (2007). They also went on tour in southern Portugal, in a street
show-based format during the summer of that year. Subsequently, they regularly
attended this annual gathering.
Jazz de marras kept growing in number, until reaching
its final quartet configuration, with the incorporation of Manuel, who brings
the warmth and mature sound of clarinet, together with the strenght of his
saxophone. Since then, the band played in small format shows in bars and concert
halls in Seville and elsewhere (as La boca del Lobo (Madrid), as part of the
Jazz con sabor a club for XXVII Festival de Jazz de Madrid). They also
performed in larger shows such as Festival Murajazz in Ronda (2008), the Jazz
Session series (2009), organized by the University of Seville -with musicians
such as Jorge Pardo- and the cultural gathering Alamedeando (2009).
In an effort to experiment other domains, in 2008 jazz
de marras plunge in artistic creation, composition, editing, performance,
recording and production of the score for the short movie Tachaaan!, winner of
many national and international awards and nominated to the Goya awards 2010
for best animated short movie. The band also enters the world of theater with
the creation of the music-theatrical show Suing! (El catacrak), together with
clown group El Calvo Invita, premiered mid-december 2010 at the Sala la
Fundición in Seville.
During 2011, and after four years of work, jazz de
marras begins the preparation, recording and production/EDITING of their first
album mesa para cuatro, released in april 2012. This album consolidates jazz de
marras' style, approaching manouche jazz, and including songs with marked
influences from classic gipsy jazz, together with other tracks that flirt with
american swing, balcans music, or even flamenco.
